The Milwaukee Brewers clinched their first World Series championship on October 29, 2026, defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 5 in Florida. In the immediate aftermath at the stadium, manager Pat Murphy spoke with first baseman Jake Bauers, who had secured the final out of the series.

During that exchange, Murphy referenced Bauers' prior stint with New York. "You're gonna be a rich f, r," Murphy told the pending free agent. "Just remember when you were on that horses-t Yankees team, you guys were all playing for yourself?" Bauers played for the Yankees in 2023, batting .202 with a .693 OPS, 12 home runs, and 30 RBI across 84 games. New York finished that season at 82-80 and missed the playoffs, the only postseason absence during Aaron Boone's nine-year tenure.

Bauers' production improved significantly after joining Milwaukee. In 2026, his third season with the Brewers, he recorded 26 home runs and 86 RBI, both career highs. He also earned NLCS MVP honors after batting .286 with six RBI during Milwaukee's four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Yankees have drawn criticism from opponents in recent years following their 17-year championship drought. Los Angeles reliever Joe Kelly commented on New York's defensive approach after the Dodgers won the 2024 World Series in five games. "It was in their scouting report to let them throw the ball to the infield; they can't make a play," Kelly said. Utility player Chris Taylor described the Yankees' fifth-inning collapse in Game 5 of that series, where New York gave up a five-run lead through three errors, by saying they "s-t down their leg."

New York's struggles extended into the following October. Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Rays infielder Junior Caminero both altered John Sterling's signature "The Yankees win!" call to "The Yankees lose!" after eliminating New York from the ALDS in 2025 and 2026. Bauers is set to enter free agency this winter following his breakout season in Milwaukee.
