Ordinary viewers and season ticket holders face a compressed window to watch the deciding game of the 2026 WNBA Finals. The Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries are set to begin play at 12:30 p.m. EST on Thursday. This midday start replaces a traditional evening slot, forcing fans to adjust their schedules to see the series conclude.

The scheduling shift stems from a direct conflict with the NBA. The Dream play their regular season home games at the 5,000-seat Gateway Center Arena. Because that venue could not accommodate the surge in final game attendance, the league moved Games 3 and 4 to the 17,000-seat State Farm Arena on Oct. 13. State Farm Arena is the home of the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks are scheduled to host the Cleveland Cavaliers at 8 p.m. EST on Thursday. Rather than alter the NBA team’s calendar, the league set the WNBA game for the afternoon.

Reactions to the late decision have been immediate and critical. Chiney Ogwumike, an ESPN basketball analyst, called the process an epic fail. She stated that players and fans deserve a primetime broadcast and noted that the issue was resolved too late. Social media users also voiced frustration. One viral TikTok post described the 12:30 p.m. start time as quite literally insane for a final game.

The Atlanta Dream’s owners have publicly assigned blame to the league. In an open letter released this week, the team stated they raised the arena capacity issue months in advance. The owners wrote that their concerns did not receive the attention or urgency they deserved. The WNBA has not issued a public response to the criticism so far.

The Golden State Valkyries hold a 3-2 series lead. They can claim the franchise’s first championship in four hours on Thursday. The team has encouraged fans in the Pacific Time Zone to call out of work to watch the game, which airs at 9:30 a.m. PST. Despite the unconventional start time, the ticket inventory for Thursday’s contest is sold out.

The finals have already set viewership records. Game 4 drew nearly 2 million television viewers, the highest number for a WNBA Finals game in history. The league continues to monitor the series as the two teams prepare for the final contest at State Farm Arena.
