Two former Globe All-Scholastics became professional national champions in a span of four days. Lexington graduate Sal Frelick won a title with the Milwaukee Brewers, while Newton South graduate Veronica Burton secured her first WNBA championship with the Golden State Valkyries. Burton hit the clinching free throws in Game 7 against the Atlanta Dream, finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The high school fall sports calendar accelerated this week as multiple leagues concluded their seasons. Seven Eastern Massachusetts cross-country leagues held championships on Saturday. In the Bay State League, Brookline won the boys title with 31 points, led by Ibrahim Abdel-Dayem’s individual win. Needham claimed the girls crown with 52 points, with Milton’s Grace Danielson taking the individual race. Other titles were claimed by Canton, Oliver Ames, Amesbury, Billerica, Masconomet, North Quincy, Seekonk, and Old Rochester across various districts.
Soccer results also moved the regular season toward its end. Boston International won its third consecutive Boston City League boys soccer title with a 1-0 victory. The O’Bryant girls ended Latin Academy’s four-year winning streak in their division, also winning 1-0. In the Merrimack Valley, Chelmsford won the girls fall swimming championship with 429 points, edging Andover’s 410. Unranked Hingham boys soccer forced a 0-0 draw with No. 2 BC High, while No. 13 Andover volleyball defeated No. 9 Reading in five sets.
Two Division 1 college commitments were announced during the weekend. Dexter Southfield junior Max Lamonica committed to play baseball at UConn. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed pitcher has recorded a max velocity of 91 miles per hour and posted a 0.60 ERA last spring. Brewster senior Reece Ayala, a 6-4 guard from Lawrence, announced he will play men’s basketball at Quinnipiac. Ayala previously attended Milton Academy.
The MIAA will release football playoff brackets at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Field hockey and girls volleyball brackets are scheduled for release on Tuesday. Boys and girls soccer regular seasons conclude on Tuesday, with those brackets following on Thursday. Saturday featured several notable plays, including a 95-yard kickoff return by Burncoat’s Jayson Adjei and a 91-yard return by Beverly’s Stephan Sullivan, though both teams lost their respective games.
Individual performances dominated the weekend stats. Medfield’s Sidney Heavey scored five goals in a 7-1 girls soccer win over Hopkinton, securing an undefeated 18-0-0 season for the Warriors. Nantucket’s David Guillen-Taveras recorded five rushing touchdowns in a 56-7 Island Cup victory over Martha’s Vineyard. In volleyball, Andover’s Kiki Wright recorded 21 kills in a 3-2 win over Reading, while Tina Zheng distributed 37 assists. Malden’s Khadijah Diagne scored a hat trick in a 4-2 win over Northeast, helping the Golden Tornadoes secure a playoff berth.
