Kyle Pitts Targets Tampa Bay Weakness as Falcons Face Bucs
With the Falcons holding the league's best run defense, Atlanta's tight end is poised to exploit Tampa Bay's secondary coverage flaws in Sunday's NFC South matchup.

Kyle Pitts prepares to test the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' secondary in Sunday's NFC South contest at Raymond James Stadium. The Falcons and Buccaneers enter the game with fresh momentum, having both defeated opponents who were favored to win. Atlanta upset the San Francisco 49ers at home to interrupt their perfect start, while Tampa Bay secured a 30-point victory in Carolina. The Buccaneers hold a two-point betting advantage for the upcoming showdown.
Both teams fielded healthy starting quarterbacks in their last wins. Baker Mayfield returned for Tampa Bay but threw for only 64 yards in the 43-13 win over Carolina. The offense relied heavily on the ground game, where Bucky Irving, Kenneth Gainwell, and Sean Tucker combined for 246 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Michael Penix Jr. led Atlanta in their victory over San Francisco, contributing to an offensive surge that has kept the Falcons competitive.
The tactical matchup centers on the running games. Atlanta's defense has limited opponents to an average of 3.8 yards per carry and 88.4 rushing yards per game through Week 8. Only Derrick Henry has rushed for over 100 yards against Kevin Stefanski's unit this season. Tampa Bay's defense has allowed just 77.3 rushing yards per game and two rushing touchdowns across seven contests. These defensive strengths suggest the games may be decided in the passing game.
Bijan Robinson leads the NFL with 704 rushing yards and adds a receiving threat. However, the Falcons' defense may force Tampa Bay to pass more frequently, particularly with Emeka Egbuka out of the lineup. That shift could increase the workload for Chris Godwin and Cade Otton. Conversely, the Buccaneers' defense struggles against tight ends due to their single-high safety schemes. They blitz at the sixth-highest rate in the league, often leaving soft spots underneath the line of scrimmage.
Pitts has exploited these gaps recently. Since Week 3, he has caught 19 of 24 targets for 176 yards and four touchdowns. He has recorded at least five receptions in three straight games. In a Week 15 matchup last season, Pitts scored three times against Tampa Bay using similar schemes. The current defensive alignment suggests those opportunities remain available.
The betting markets reflect this dynamic. Kyle Pitts is listed as an anytime touchdown scorer at +300 on FanDuel. His over 3.5 receptions line sits at -118 on BetMGM. The play focuses on Pitts' reception floor while capturing the upside of his touchdown potential.
The Falcons will look to maintain their defensive identity against the run, while the Buccaneers aim to replicate their rushing success from the Carolina game. Pitts serves as the primary weapon for Atlanta if the game becomes a passing duel. The outcome will depend on whether Tampa Bay can contain Robinson and force Atlanta to throw into their preferred matchup.
