Massapequa field hockey defeated No. 2 Port Washington, 4-1, on Friday to claim its sixth consecutive Nassau Class A championship. The victory occurred at Cold Spring Harbor High School.
Giuliana Guerriero, a first-year member of the roster, provided two of the four goals. She opened the scoring with a deflection off Kaitlyn Terranova during a penalty corner in the first quarter. Terranova added the second goal with 4:19 remaining in the first half. She collected a rebound off the right pipe and redirected the ball into the cage from the stroke line.
Port Washington, which finished the season with an 8-8-1 record, did not score until the third quarter. Lexi Raskin netted the Vikings' only goal on a penalty corner. The team earned 15 penalty corners compared to Massapequa's seven, but Brooke Donnellan and the defensive line prevented further scoring.
Massapequa extended its lead in the third quarter. Guerriero found the cage again, and Delaney Diesso added a goal on a reverse sweep. The defense secured the win during the final quarter.
Guerriero said the win felt special because it was her first year on the team and because the group wanted the title more than the opponent. “This one feels really special because not only is it my first year on this team, but we knew Port Washington really wanted to win this one,” Guerriero said. “and we just wanted it more.”
Donnellan, a senior, described the achievement as meaningful for closing out her playing career. “It means so much to me to finish my senior season with a six-peat,” Donnellan said. “But we’re not even done yet. This team has so much talent. Everyone, from our goalies to our offense to our sideline, has so much talent and I’m so excited to see where this season continues to go.”
Massapequa, which holds an 11-5 record, plays Northport in the Long Island Class A championship on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. The subregional contest will be held at Adelphi. Coach Morgan Ortega noted that the team has not won a Long Island title since 2006.
