Left-wing incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defeated Senator Flavio Bolsonaro by a margin of more than 4.4 million votes in Sunday’s presidential runoff. The final tally stood at 64.25 million votes for Lula and 59.83 million for Bolsonaro.

The right-wing candidate initially rejected the outcome, calling the results unacceptable in a speech to supporters on Sunday. Bolsonaro cited a last-minute extension of voting hours as a primary reason for his dissent. He stated he would take legal action and request that the elections be annulled.

The extension was granted by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin. Zanin allowed polling stations that had not yet closed to remain open until 7 p.m. Brasilia time, rather than the standard 5 p.m. closing time. Both campaigns had petitioned for the change, though for different reasons. Bolsonaro’s team pointed to heavy rains in southern Brazil that hindered travel, while Lula’s camp argued that reduced public transportation in some cities suppressed turnout among working-class voters.

Bolsonaro claimed the ruling favored his opponent because Zanin had previously served as Lula’s personal lawyer before being appointed to the high court in 2023. The senator described the decision as changing the rules of the game mid-match. However, Pedro Burgos, a professor at the educational institute Insper, analyzed the data and found the extension added only 35,000 votes nationwide. This represented less than 0.03 percent of the total count, a fraction of Lula’s lead.

On Monday, Valdemar Costa Neto, leader of the Liberal Party, issued a statement acknowledging the result. “We recognise the presidential election results,” Costa Neto said. “But we believe the issues raised need to be properly clarified.” This move signaled a shift in the party’s stance, even as Bolsonaro had not formally conceded.

US President Donald Trump commented on the vote on Monday, telling reporters the process looked rigged. “It looked like another rigged election, frankly,” Trump said. He added that elections must be indisputable and noted that the situation appeared bad. Despite the criticism, Trump said he did not take sides in the election.

Concerns have arisen regarding Bolsonaro’s adherence to democratic norms, given his father Jair Bolsonaro’s history. The former president, who served from 2019 to 2023, refused to concede the 2022 election and is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence on coup-related charges. He is also barred from public office for eight years for spreading misinformation. Flavio Bolsonaro and his siblings have argued that their father’s trial constitutes political persecution.

Folha de S Paulo reported on Monday that legal advisers and political allies have convinced Bolsonaro to abandon his quest to annul the loss. The outlet noted that the large margin of victory and validation by the Supreme Court influenced this decision. Additionally, Bolsonaro announced that federal police asked him to hand over his passports. He said he would comply with the order and had no plans to leave the country, stating he would organize the opposition to withstand the chaos.
