Twenty-three percent is the probability that Lamine Yamal wins the 2026 Ballon d'Or, according to Avisia, a French data analysis firm. This figure makes the 19-year-old Barcelona winger the statistical favorite for the award covering the 2025-26 season. The announcement of the winner will take place at the London Palladium in less than a day.
The race has narrowed to three primary contenders: Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane. Yamal and Mbappe have both publicly campaigned for the prize. Kane, who has scored heavily this season, has remained more reserved in his approach to the campaign. The divergence in predictions is stark between different forecasting models. Avisia rates Kane second at 21 percent and Mbappe third at 19 percent. Rodri, the 2024 winner, is also at 19 percent, while Lionel Messi sits at 18 percent with a potential record-extending ninth win. Conversely, bookmakers favor Kane, listing him as the outright favorite with approximately a 70 percent chance of victory.
Former players and current managers have weighed in on the likely outcome. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Messi, citing the Argentine's performance after the World Cup. "After the World Cup, he played at his age… No doubt about it," Simeone said. Jude Bellingham backed Kane, describing him as an honest and hard-working person. Anthony Gordon chose Yamal, calling him "on a whole other level," while Real Madrid teammate Aurelien Tchouameni praised Mbappe's incredible season.
The statistical cases for the top contenders show different strengths. Mbappe led La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15. He also took the World Cup Golden Boot and set a record with 12 World Cup goals. Kane's 73 goals last season are the highest total by any player since Messi's 82 in 2011-12. However, trophy counts complicate their cases. Mbappe won no major titles with club or country. Kane won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich but finished third at the World Cup with England.
Yamal's case rests on major silverware. He won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, despite injury hampering his personal statistics. Historical data supports this approach; only four of the previous 19 Ballon d'Or winners did not win the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America in the year of their award. A win for Yamal would make him the youngest recipient in the award's history. The current record holder is Brazil's Ronaldo, who was 21 when he won in 1997.
