Kylian Mbappe will not be the bookmakers' favorite when the Ballon d'Or ceremony takes place in London on Monday.

The French forward enters the voting with a clean slate of major silverware for the 2025-26 season, a statistical anomaly for the award's recent winners. Instead of pointing to a trophy cabinet, he leans on a set of individual records that he believes justify a change in the selection criteria.

His central argument rests on his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe secured the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament and established himself as the all-time leading scorer in the competition's history. He finished with 22 goals in 22 matches, edging out Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. The former PSG forward stated that overtaking historical legends in the most important tournament is a distinct achievement. When asked who he was voting for, he answered directly: "Myself."

Beyond the World Cup, Mbappe maintained high scoring averages in club football. He recorded 25 goals to lead the scoring charts in La Liga and added 15 in the Champions League, where he also finished as the top scorer. He noted that leading the scoring tables in the biggest competitions provided a strong foundation for his candidacy.

The absence of team success remains the primary weakness in his case. Real Madrid experienced a turbulent campaign, shifting management from Xabi Alonso to Alvaro Arbeloa. The club finished second in La Liga and exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals against Bayern Munich, marking their second consecutive season without a major title. France's World Cup run ended in fourth place after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place match.

His closest rivals finished the year with hardware. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. Harry Kane collected three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga championship.

Mbappe dismisses the emphasis on team accolades, arguing that the award recognizes individual performance rather than a collective unit. He told the radio station RFI that the ballot will name a single player, not a team, and that eye-catching individual moments are the primary factor for voters. Jose Mourinho, his manager at Real Madrid, publicly supported the bid, stating that the club knew who made history during the summer tournament.

Historical data suggests his path is difficult. Every Ballon d'Or recipient over the past decade lifted at least one trophy during the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 prize after helping PSG secure their first Champions League title. Rodri won the 2024 award following a double with Spain and Manchester City. The last player to win without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013, who defeated Messi to claim the honor after Real Madrid finished second in the league and Portugal failed to advance past the World Cup playoffs.

The ceremony is scheduled for Monday in London. Mbappe has received nine nominations in his career, including a third-place finish in 2023. The voting will determine if his record-breaking scoring year is enough to override the traditional requirement for team success.
