Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premier League vanished on Saturday as Aston Villa handed the champions their first loss of the season. City were defeated 2-1 at Villa Park, a result that allowed Arsenal to close the gap on the standings. The Gunners, playing in heavy rain at the Emirates Stadium, defeated Everton 2-0 to level with City. After eight games, both clubs now sit on 21 points, creating a tight contest for the title. The race is unfolding against the backdrop of City's ongoing appeal regarding an independent commission's finding that the club committed 114 breaches of the league's financial rules. The club has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Arsenal secured their victory in north London with two goals. The opening goal arrived in the seventh minute, following a corner from Martin Odegaard. The delivery caused a scramble in the Everton box, and after goalkeeper Jordan Pickford stopped the initial effort, Ezri Konsa pushed the ball into the net from close range. The match marked Konsa's first goal for the club. It also ended a run of 13 games across all competitions without a goal from a set piece, a drought dating back to May.

Konsa commented on the club's ambitions following the win. "We are champions and to be champions you've got to win games consistently," he said. "This is our home, and we want to win as many games here as possible."

Arsenal's second goal came in the 68th minute, involving two players marking specific milestones. Ben White, making his 200th appearance for Arsenal, delivered a cross to the far post. Gabriel, playing in his 200th Premier League match, headed the ball into the goal. The result left Everton in ninth place in the standings.

At Villa Park, Aston Villa defeated Manchester City for the third consecutive league meeting. Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring for Villa in the sixth minute following a turnover by Marc Guehi that allowed John McGinn to set up the striker. Erling Haaland equalized for City shortly after the interval, heading in a free kick from Iliman Ndiaye. Jackson scored the deciding goal on the hour mark, finishing a cutback from Ibrahim Mbaye with a shot that went under goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. With the victory, Villa moved to sixth place with 11 points.

Jackson addressed the result after the match. "It's just the beginning; we're trying to work game by game," he told TNT Sports.

In other matches, Tottenham Hotspur defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, starting his first league match, punched a corner into his own net in the 77th minute. Cole Palmer received a second yellow card in the 80th minute for a challenge on Conor Gallagher. Mathys Tel scored in the 87th minute, moving to 12th place in the table. Fulham also won 1-0 against Coventry City, with Oscar Bobb scoring in the 80th minute. Fulham occupy 13th place, while Coventry sit 19th.
