More than 150,000 spectators typically gather at major horse racing events like the Breeders' Cup or the Kentucky Derby. That attendance figure exceeds the typical crowds for mainstream football, basketball, and baseball games in the United States.
The 2026 Breeders' Cup returns to Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 30 and 31. This marks the fourth time the track has hosted the championship meeting. Keeneland is also celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2026, which adds to the local significance of the schedule.
The pre-race season begins with Keeneland's Fall Meet, which runs from October 2 through October 24. This period serves as the opening chapter for the local racing calendar. City officials and community organizers have planned a series of public events to extend the atmosphere beyond the racetrack.
The citywide festival schedule starts on October 25 with Purple in the Park at Gatton Park. This free family event features horses, jockey-silk photo opportunities, face painting, live music, and food trucks. The programming is designed to allow local residents to participate without purchasing a ticket to the championships.
From October 26 through October 29, Keeneland offers Sunrise Trackside: Breeders' Cup Edition from 7 to 10 a.m. each day. Visitors can watch championship contenders exercise on the main track while eating breakfast. The event provides a look at the morning routines that occur before the grandstands fill, and no ticket is required.
Downtown Lexington will host the Tandy Park Takeover from October 26 through October 29. Approximately 50 local artists are expected to paint outdoors using jockey silks as their canvas. The project takes place around the Old Courthouse lawn and Fifth Third Pavilion. Proceeds from the event will benefit LexArts.
Music events form a separate part of the festival lineup. Purple & Blues Monday will be held at the Historic Lyric Theatre, featuring Lexington blues musician Tee Dee Young alongside Ally Venable. Later in the week, The Burl will host Purple Rein, a free Prince-themed event featuring the cover band The Purple Experience.
On the championship days of October 30 and 31, Gatton Park will host a free watch party. The races will be shown on a giant LED screen alongside food trucks, live music, and equine-themed activities. This option provides a public gathering space for residents who do not have tickets to the venue.
