Apple’s iPhone Duo is now available for purchase at a price of $1,999. The device marks the company’s entry into the foldable smartphone market, a category Samsung pioneered with the Galaxy Fold seven years ago. Early reviews from Wired describe the hardware as a "pretty dang good foldable," suggesting that years of quiet development improved the device's physical build.
The launch follows a long gap in Apple's foldable plans. Samsung introduced the first consumer foldable in 2019. Apple spent the intervening years refining its own design behind closed doors. The iPhone Duo finally reaches shelves on October 23, 2026, ending that wait for consumers who wanted a folding iPhone.
Software presents the most immediate challenge for new owners. The phone features a 5.4-inch outer screen and a 7.6-inch inner display. This new form factor has not been fully adopted by all app developers. While Apple’s own apps are optimized, third-party applications often appear as narrow strips with black bars on the sides. Slack, Instagram, DoorDash, and WhatsApp have received updates for iOS 27.1, but some still show broken interface elements. Apple has also moved navigation controls to the right side of the screen rather than the bottom center.
The hardware design includes a return to Touch ID for fingerprint security. The sensor is located on the right side of the device. This is the first flagship iPhone to use this technology since the iPhone SE, iPads, and MacBooks retained it. The device lacks Face ID, which Wired suggests is due to the phone's thin profile. The Dynamic Island remains, positioned at the top-right edge near the outer camera.
Accessories require specific attention due to the device's shape. When unfolded and attached to MagSafe car docks or tripods, the phone tips to one side because of uneven weight distribution. Magnetic wallets fit but extend past the bottom edge because the Duo is shorter than standard iPhones. Apple offers no official fix for these issues.
Future updates are scheduled for later this year. A software patch will add Reachability, allowing users to shift apps to the side instead of pulling them down. Another update will support the USB-C Apple Pencil for writing and drawing. The phone currently supports splitting the keyboard for easier typing on the wide inner display.
Repair costs are defined in Apple's support documents. A damaged matte nano-texture finish on the inner screen costs $19 in warranty or $49 out of warranty. A cracked inner display costs $999 without AppleCare+ coverage. Buyers should note that the inner screen finish is an "integral" component, and Apple advises against attempting to remove it.
