Apple has released the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, with a configuration that leaves two of its primary selling points locked behind separate purchases. The device supports Apple Pencil input and rapid charging, but neither function works fully with the items included in the box. Buyers looking to use these features immediately must spend an additional $249 on specific third-party or first-party hardware.

The stylus capability marks a first for the iPhone line, allowing users to write and sketch on both the inner and outer displays. Apple stated that the design mirrors the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook. The feature is not active at launch, as it requires the iOS 27.2 update scheduled to arrive next week. Only the Apple Pencil with USB-C compatibility is supported, and it is currently priced at $69, a reduction from its standard $79 cost.

Fast charging performance is similarly dependent on external hardware. The iPhone Duo can charge from zero to 50 percent in approximately 20 minutes, but only when paired with a high-wattage power adapter. The retail box contains a USB-C cable but no power brick, a practice consistent with recent iPhone models. While many users may own a 20W adapter, the recommended hardware includes Apple's 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, listed at $34, or Anker's 100W USB-C charger, priced at $29.

The device also introduces an updated StandBy mode that remains active when the phone is upright, even if it is not connected to a power source. This mode includes views for smart home controls, such as Home Camera and Home Modular. These features provide access to security systems and other connected devices. For users wishing to utilize this functionality, compatible hardware includes the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 and the eufy 4K camera at $69.

Protection and connectivity options round out the available accessories. Third-party cases include the SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case with a built-in stand at $29 and the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro at $39. Apple offers its own Folio with Kickstand at $129 and a standard case at $79. For automotive use, the ESR MagSafe Car Mount is listed at $19, allowing the device to clip to air vents while integrating with CarPlay for navigation.
