Defending champion Elena Rybakina secured her place in the Ningbo Open final by defeating sixth seed Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre. The victory positions the world number one for a second consecutive title in the eastern Chinese city.
Rybakina entered the match after a recent setback in Beijing and a withdrawal from the Wuhan tournament due to a foot injury. Despite these difficulties, she managed to overcome Shnaider, who is ranked 13th, to reach the final. Her opponent on Sunday will be unseeded Canadian Leylah Fernandez, who claimed her spot by beating Czech player Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 7-5 in the first semifinal.
The match against Shnaider presented specific tactical challenges for Rybakina, primarily due to Shnaider’s left-handed game. Rybakina noted that returning shots from a left-hander requires adjusting the pattern of play, a dynamic she found difficult to manage during rallies. She described the contest as a long struggle, particularly in the opening set where she required 11 set points to close it out.
In the second set, Rybakina struggled with first-serve accuracy but maintained composure in critical moments. She broke Shnaider’s serve to take a 4-3 lead, though she was subsequently broken to love in the 10th game. Rybakina responded with aggressive hitting to regain the lead and then served with greater confidence to finish the match.
Fernandez presents a similar physical test for Rybakina, as the Canadian is also left-handed. This mirrors the difficulty Rybakina faced against Shnaider in adjusting to the angle and direction of incoming shots. Rybakina acknowledged the specific challenge of playing against left-handers, stating there are not many on the tour and that she needed time to adapt during the rallies.
Following this semifinal victory, Rybakina will prepare for the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo the following week. She will then turn her attention to the WTA Finals at Indian Wells, where she will defend her title starting November 8. Rybakina described the prospect of winning back-to-back trophies at the Ningbo Open as a difficult task, but she committed to giving her full effort in the final.
The result serves as a performance benchmark for Rybakina ahead of the year-end championships. Her ability to close out tight points against a top-15 opponent suggests she is regaining form after her recent injury. The final on Sunday will be the deciding match for the Ningbo Open title.
