It now takes less than a second to start capturing video on Meta’s AI glasses, a feature that has transformed the devices into personal dashcams for runners. Nick, a writer for 9to5Google, described this new utility in an article published today, noting that the camera built into most pairs of the glasses serves as a form of personal insurance on the road.

The practice began when Nick started running this summer, an activity they had not anticipated. Although friends joked about the logic of running without a pursuer, Nick admitted to speeding up to avoid being hit by vehicles. This habit was most pronounced during road crossings, even when crosswalks were present. The situation posed a practical problem: how could a pedestrian document a potential accident? Holding a phone was impractical, and pocket storage or armband holsters did not allow for fast enough access to film an incident.

Nick realized the solution was already on their face. They had been wearing Meta glasses on every run to shoot short clips for Strava, with smartwatch health stats overlaid on the video. Taking extra clips along the route proved to be an easy step. The setup requires minimal effort. Nick wears a Meta Nova pair or an Oakley Meta HSTN pair on regular runs. When a car approaches, they hold the camera button to begin recording. Once across the road, they press the button again to stop manually.

The glasses are configured to record in three-minute segments, ensuring that a recording is unlikely to end before a potential problem unfolds. Footage remains on the glasses until they reconnect to the phone, at which point it syncs automatically. Nick described the process as about as effortless as it gets, stating that it works as impressive insurance if something goes wrong. They added that if buying a new pair today, they would be unlikely to choose one without a camera, despite some negativity surrounding the feature.

For runners interested in the approach, Nick recommended starting with the Oakley Meta HSTN glasses, which offer the tightest fit and the most runner-like style. The cheaper Meta-branded pairs, which lack Ray-Ban or Oakley branding, are a better budget choice because there is no functional difference among Meta’s latest models. For those who prefer to avoid Meta entirely, Nick identified Rokid AI Glasses as the best alternative they have used so far.
