Apple sold 23,000 units of its first foldable device, the iPhone Duo, as walk-in inventory vanished from retail shelves on Friday, October 23. The company confirmed the sales figure in a statement issued on the same day that the phone officially went on sale.

The device launched globally on Friday morning. Apple released a series of photographs showing customers filling its stores, where staff provided hands-on demonstrations. Senior leaders attended different locations to mark the release. Greg Joswiak, the senior vice president of worldwide marketing, was at the Fifth Avenue flagship in New York with retail executive Vanessa Trigub.

CEO John Ternus attended the launch at the Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. He was joined by retail chief Deirdre O'Brien. Ternus had toured Apple's Austin offices earlier in the week. The city is also hosting the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix this weekend, with Apple serving as the exclusive US streamer for the event.

Overnight queues formed outside stores in multiple countries as shoppers sought to purchase the iPhone Duo without an online reservation. Apple had previously warned that in-store stock would be limited. By the end of the day, that limited supply was gone. Employees told disappointed customers to check the Apple Store app on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET to see what inventory remained.

The 23,000 units sold represent the total walk-in sales reported by the company. Online orders placed before Friday were separate from this count. The next scheduled update on availability will occur via the app on Saturday morning.
