Fifty commercial signals-intelligence satellites now orbit the Earth. The count reached this number on Oct. 23 when Rocket Lab launched three new units into space from New Zealand.

An Electron rocket left the launch site at 3:11 a.m. EDT. The payload carried three 'Hawk' satellites built for HawkEye 360, a firm headquartered in Virginia. Rocket Lab labeled the mission 'We're Not Hawking Around' as a reference to the customer's technology.

The three spacecraft will separate at an altitude of 323 miles. Once in low Earth orbit, they will begin scanning the planet for radio frequency emissions. According to Rocket Lab, the satellites operate in clusters to collect data for maritime tracking, radar monitoring, and space defense.

HawkEye 360 provides this information to the U.S. government and allied nations. The company stated its goal is to transform knowledge of the radio frequency spectrum into a strategic advantage for decision-making.

This deployment followed another Hawk launch by just two days. Three previous satellites flew on a SpaceX rideshare mission. The current launch marks Rocket Lab's 98th flight overall and its 19th mission of 2026. Sixteen of those flights used the standard two-stage Electron rocket, while three used the HASTE suborbital variant.
