A gunman opened fire in the northern suburbs of Paris today, killing one person and injuring five others in an attack authorities are investigating as a terrorist and racist crime.

The assault began at approximately 10:30am local time. Over the course of roughly 15 minutes, a suspect identified as 39-year-old Kevin T. drove through the communities of Trappes and La Verriere, firing an automatic weapon at a petrol station, a medical center, and a children's playground. Police arrested the suspect at the scene. Among the injured is a 12-year-old girl who was seriously hurt. The deceased victim was named as Pengo Bassio Wangi. French media reported the victim was young and Black, and that the wounded included a woman wearing a headscarf. Prosecutors stated three of the five injured individuals are in critical condition.

Local MP Laurent Mazaury said the suspect told officers he wanted to "kill foreigners" and added, "I think we are facing a racist person." Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated the incident was "clearly a terrorist crime" while investigations continue. Investigators recovered a World War II era semiautomatic weapon and tear gas grenades from the suspect's car, and a member of his immediate family has been taken into custody. President Emmanuel Macron described the violence as a "racist terrorist attack" and a "turning point in the life of our Republic and our nation," affirming France's commitment to fighting racism.

The shooting occurred amid a backdrop of violent protests regarding cost-of-living and student issues. Authorities are preparing to deploy 70,000 police officers on Saturday in anticipation of further demonstrations. The incident has drawn sharp reactions across the political spectrum. Far-right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen condemned the shooting as "barbaric," while Muslim advocacy groups accused the populist right of fostering hatred through Islamophobic rhetoric. The French Muslim Council stated that those promoting anti-Muslim hate speech have "blood on their hands."

Monitors report that hostility toward Muslims is rising. In a statement, Amnesty International said Islamophobic violence in the United Kingdom had reached "emergency levels" as of June. The EU's Fundamental Rights Agency indicates one in two Muslims in Europe face racial discrimination, and the US state of California reported a 54 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes during 2025.
