Two NYPD officers shot Victor Soto on Monday afternoon after he pointed a firearm at patrons inside a Bronx deli. The 49-year-old man was taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition following the exchange of gunfire.
Detectives said the incident began around 3:20 p.m. at Sammy Gourmet Deli on Bainbridge Avenue and East 194th Street. Surveillance footage showed Soto arguing with several people inside the shop before he produced a gun. Customers ducked for cover as he pointed the weapon at them. Police stated that Soto had been harassing individuals in the deli prior to drawing the firearm.
Soto exited the building and moved northbound with the gun in hand. Detectives noted that he violently slammed the weapon into a glass window of the deli. Two responding officers arrived and ordered him to drop the gun. Soto did not comply and pointed the weapon at the officers.
An exchange of gunfire followed. Soto continued firing while moving northbound in front of civilians before the officers struck him. A firearm was recovered at the scene. No officer was hit during the incident, but both were taken to the hospital for evaluation. Body camera footage from the officers also captured the sequence of events.
Records indicate Soto has eight prior arrests, with several involving criminal possession of a firearm. Road closures and delays were expected in the area following the shooting.
The incident occurred at 2657 Bainbridge Avenue. Police confirmed the shooting was police-involved and that one person was injured.
