Business leaders in the Boston area will gather on November 4 to examine the specific challenges of building and scaling startups outside of traditional tech hubs. The full-day event, hosted by TechCrunch and Fidelity Private Shares, is scheduled for the SoWa Power Station. Attendees will engage in sessions that address practical business decisions, ranging from finding initial customers to managing team growth.
Steve Fredette, president and co-founder of Toast, will deliver a keynote address on the Impact Stage. His session, titled "Building a Company That Keeps Reinventing Itself," will explore how Toast evolved from a local startup into a public corporation. The discussion aims to analyze how companies maintain their core mission while adapting to shifting technology and market expectations.
Investment strategies form a central part of the agenda. Kent Bennett, a partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, will lead a session on identifying product market fit before increasing spending or headcount. Rudina Seseri, founder and managing partner of Glasswing Ventures, will contrast the timing for acceleration with moments where restraint is necessary for business survival.
The program also addresses the integration of artificial intelligence. Lior Div, CEO and co-founder of 7AI, will present on designing companies with AI at the center of their architecture. This session distinguishes between adding AI tools to existing workflows and building an entire operating model around new technology.
Local growth strategies will be a focal point, particularly in a session by Chase Garbarino, CEO and co-founder of HqO. Garbarino will discuss the "Boston Founder Playbook," covering talent acquisition, capital access, and community building within the city. This talk complements the Toast presentation by highlighting the potential for building ambitious companies without relying on Silicon Valley models.
Pitching skills will be tested in a live format on the Build Stage. Dave Balter, a venture partner at True Ventures, will lead a discussion on creating effective pitch decks. In a subsequent session, founders will present live to a panel that includes Chirag Shah of Define Ventures and Simran Suri of Maveron. This format provides immediate feedback on investor reactions.
Additional speakers include Hunter Worland of NEA, who will discuss distribution as a competitive advantage, and Vineet Edupuganti of Cogent Security, who will address team building. Kristen Craft and Evan Schnidman from Fidelity Private Shares will cover fundraising trends and enterprise relationships. TechCrunch is currently offering a 25% discount and a buy-one-get-one deal for event registrations.
