President Donald Trump stood before the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Monday to make his final public pitch to voters ahead of the midterm elections. The visit occurred one day after the pool officially reopened following extensive repairs. The site served as a backdrop for a speech focused on Washington infrastructure and the upcoming Tuesday vote.
Trump claimed the pool was "finished" during a Sunday speech in Iowa. He stated on Monday that the trip was "just to show how beautiful it is." The platform behind the president featured signs reading “Restoring Our Capitol” and “The Reflecting Pool.” An aerial image on the lectern displayed the caption: “Back, and more beautiful than ever!”
The president spoke about the troubled repair process for twenty minutes. He asserted that vandals had damaged the pool. This account differs from a prior court admission that shoddy renovations commissioned by the White House caused the original shuttering. Trump joked during the event that he would rename the pool after himself.
Turning to the election, Trump called Tuesday’s vote potentially the most important midterms "in our lifetime." He described his political opponents as extremists. The president claimed Democrats had "nominated the most extreme and dangerous slate of candidates in American history." He argued that the United States currently has its most secure borders and the largest income tax cuts in the nation’s history.
Polling data suggests Democrats have improved their chances of taking control of the House and Senate. Public frustration has risen over inflation and the decision to launch the Iran war. Despite this, Trump noted that sitting presidents often struggle in midterm cycles. He said, “For some reason, the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms. But we gave this a very strong shot.”
The White House said the president would join seven additional tele-rallies later on Monday. These events were scheduled to continue into the evening. The midterm elections will determine which party controls the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The Reflecting Pool repairs were a key part of the administration's recent construction agenda. Trump used the physical restoration as a symbol for his broader political message. The event marked the end of his in-person campaigning for the 2026 cycle.
