Voters in King County have until 8 p.m. on Election Day to register and vote in person. Kendall Hodson, Chief of Staff for King County Elections, confirmed that the election centers will remain open for latecomers. Individuals who arrive by the deadline will be allowed to complete the process even if they are not yet on the rolls.
The final hours before the deadline often see a surge of activity at the first-floor elections centers. These locations serve as the primary hub for last-minute registrants and those seeking replacement ballots. Hodson noted that the county anticipates lines forming as the evening approaches. He encouraged voters to arrive early to secure their place in line and ensure their ballots are counted.
Behind the scenes, election headquarters in Renton has been processing mail-in ballots for days. Workers on the second floor verify and scan each envelope as it arrives. This continuous verification process ensures that every ballot from a King County voter is recorded before the official tally begins.
Seven specific election centers in King County are open for same-day registration. Voters can also use these locations to resolve issues with their ballots or ask questions about the voting process. Each county in Washington State maintains at least one center open until 8 p.m. on election night. The Washington Secretary of State’s website lists the available locations for voters to check.
Hodson stated that voters do not need to bring documents to register. He said, "All they need is themselves." He added that having a Washington State ID or driver's license is helpful but not mandatory. He also noted that knowing the last four digits of a Social Security number could aid in the registration process.
The county will lock drop boxes and close vote center doors at 8 p.m. However, Hodson clarified that anyone in line by that time will still be permitted to vote. Their ballots will be considered on time. He emphasized that the office is prepared to assist voters who wait until the final moments to participate.
Voters should visit the Washington Secretary of State’s website to locate their nearest election center. The centers will accept registrations and ballots until the 8 p.m. cutoff. Hodson recommended arriving earlier than the deadline to avoid potential delays.
