The Charles in Old Wethersfield closes after six years
Owner Bryce Hardy cites building limits, a 2024 market closure, and personal family losses in the decision to end operations at the historic Main Street location.

The Charles restaurant in Old Wethersfield announced on Monday afternoon that it is permanently closing its doors. The eatery operated for six years before the owner, Bryce D. Hardy, posted the news on the business website and social media channels.
Hardy opened the 1790 E.G. Robbins House location on Main Street in 2020. The restaurant began operations during the COVID-19 pandemic with the intent of creating a gathering space for local residents. Hardy stated that the business faced challenges from its first day but continued operating through the difficulties.
The historic structure presented specific operational constraints that hindered growth. Hardy identified limited kitchen capacity and accessibility issues as primary factors. He also pointed to the 2024 closure of BAKE Market as a major setback that impacted the restaurant's trajectory.
Personal losses compounded the business challenges this year. Hardy reported that he lost both of his parents following their battles with dementia. He described managing the restaurant during that period as difficult but said he valued the time spent with his family over the business itself.
"After six unforgettable years, it is with a heavy heart that I share that The Charles has permanently closed its doors," Hardy wrote in the message to customers. He added that family relationships and loved ones always matter more than any business.
Hardy directed thanks to the restaurant employees, past and present, for bringing the location to life. He also thanked customers for celebrating milestones at the tables. The owner specifically acknowledged his wife and daughter for believing in the project and providing support throughout the six-year run.
The announcement generated substantial attention on social media. The restaurant will no longer serve customers after the closure date. The historic building on Main Street remains in the Old Wethersfield area.
