New York residents now have a new executive hierarchy. Governor Kathy Hochul and Lieutenant Governor Adrienne Adams form the state's first all-female statewide leadership team following Tuesday's election.
Hochul won a second full term by defeating Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. The Associated Press called the race approximately 30 minutes after polls closed. Hochul secured a 20-point lead statewide. In New York City, she captured 75% of the vote, while Blakeman received less than 25%.
The candidates employed distinct campaign strategies. Hochul campaigned in the city alongside Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Blakeman focused his outreach on suburban counties and moderate neighborhoods. Both spent election night awaiting results. Hochul held a victory event in Midtown. Blakeman met with supporters in Nassau County before conceding defeat.
During her victory speech, Hochul addressed the electorate directly. "Serving you has taught me that leadership isn't just about having the courage to make the tough calls. It's about having the humility to recognize what you can do better. Through it all I answer to no one except the people of New York. Even in our darkest days, I said do not bet against New York ever," she said.
Blakeman addressed his supporters after the race was called. "Now we pull together. We move forward. We have the best interest of the people in our hearts. The final analysis we are all Americans. May God bless you all and God bless America. Thank you!" he stated.
Hochul first took office in 2021 as the state's first female governor. The 2026 election result extends her tenure and pairs her with Adams, who was elected lieutenant governor in the same cycle. The outcome confirms a shift in the state's top executive offices to women leaders for the upcoming term.
