Iara Dossantos Bomfim, 29, was charged with ten felony counts of child abuse in Orange County, California, after video evidence documented repeated physical assaults on a baby she cared for.
The incident began on July 11, 2026, when the baby's mother heard her three-month-old son scream and checked the family's nanny cam. While Bomfim told the mother that everything was fine, the recorded footage showed the nanny sitting on a yoga ball and bouncing the infant so that his head and neck moved back and forth and side to side. The video also captured her punching the baby in the back of the head with a closed fist.
According to the Orange County District Attorney's Office, the abuse started on June 17, 2026, when the baby was two months and ten days old. The alleged strikes and shaking continued until the child was just over three months old.
Bomfim left the United States for Brazil in July. She returned to the country this week and was arrested on Friday while attempting to create a new profile on the caregiving platform Care.com.
The defendant has pleaded not guilty to the charges. She is currently held on $500,000 bail. If convicted on all ten counts, she faces a maximum sentence of 18 years in state prison.
