Barack Obama defeated Senator John McCain by a wide margin in the 2008 presidential election, securing 338 electoral votes to his opponent's 161. The result marked a decisive shift in American politics and concluded a highly contested campaign.

The final days of October have historically served as a backdrop for dramatic turns in global events. On October 29, 1929, the New York Stock Exchange crashed on what is known as Black Tuesday. This financial collapse precipitated the Great Depression and altered the economic outlook for a generation.

The date also marks the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The storm caused widespread damage along the eastern seaboard, becoming one of the costliest weather events in U.S. history. In a lighter cultural moment, the same month saw the completion of construction on the Mount Rushmore memorial in 1941.

Late October and early November have produced other notable firsts. In 1992, Pope John Paul II admitted that the Roman Catholic Church had erred in convicting Galileo of heresy. This acknowledgment came 350 years after the original verdict and signaled a shift in the church's stance on science and history.

The period around November 1 also holds scientific and political weight. The United States exploded its first hydrogen bomb in the Marshall Islands in 1952. A few days later, on November 3, the Soviet Union sent Laika, the first animal, into space aboard Sputnik II. Laika died during the orbit.

Closer to home, the final weekend of October often brings weather and cultural milestones. In 1938, a radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds caused nationwide panic among listeners. That same week in 2008, the electoral college results were finalized, cementing Obama's victory with a total of 338 votes.
