Great Neck Public Schools announced on October 30, 2026, that Lakeville Elementary School has been named an Apple Distinguished School. The school joins E.M. Baker, John F. Kennedy, Parkville, and Saddle Rock Elementary schools, which have already secured the designation. With this award, every elementary campus in the district now holds the title for the 2026-2029 program term.
Lakeville Principal Emily Zucal stated that the school focuses on using technology to boost student engagement and support well-being. She emphasized a strategy that balances digital tools with traditional learning methods. "At Lakeville, we are very intentional in making sure that students have a balance of digital and non-digital learning experiences," Zucal said. "Our goal is to not simply use technology more, but to use it well."
The district’s approach involves equipping classrooms with Apple products and one-to-one devices. These tools are paired with other instructional platforms to support specific teaching goals. The program requires schools to show a clear vision for how technology advances learning. It also looks for documented academic accomplishments and innovative teaching approaches.
District Director of Technology Justin Lander noted that the recognition reflects the daily efforts of teachers. He said the awards demonstrate how educators incorporate digital tools into their lessons. "All five of our elementary schools are now recognized as Apple Distinguished Schools, which reflects not only the innovative use of technology in our schools but also the meaningful ways our teachers incorporate it into classroom instruction," Lander said. He added that intentional technology use is a major part of the selection criteria.
