Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed led his cabinet ministers and senior government officials through military exercises at the Hurso military training centre. He posted images of the event on social media, showing himself participating alongside deputy ministers and heads of government institutions. The prime minister stated that the nation's goal of universal prosperity requires a leadership that is physically fit, morally strong, and intellectually capable.
The session included high-ranking figures such as Muferiat Kamil, Speaker of the House of Federation, Fitsum Assefa, the Finance Minister, and Mekdes Daba, the Health Minister. This type of training is uncommon for senior civilian officials in Ethiopia. It is currently unclear when the program began or how long it will continue.
Abiy argued that military institutions provide essential lessons in discipline, patriotism, teamwork, and accountability. He noted that while soldiers have targets and civilians have goals, both groups aim for victory. Combining these disciplines, he said, would help create a generation capable of achieving those objectives.
The training takes place while Ethiopia faces ongoing security issues in the northern Tigray region, the Amhara region, and Oromia. Tensions with neighbouring Eritrea have also increased, raising concerns about renewed conflict between the two countries. Abiy has previously identified military preparedness and national development as central priorities for his government.
