President Donald Trump is offering $1 million to citizens who report voter fraud that results in an arrest and conviction. The announcement was made on Monday via the Truth Social platform, covering both upcoming and past elections.
Trump stated that the payment would be triggered specifically upon the "arrest and conviction of those that created the fraud." He did not identify the source of the funds for these potential payouts. A White House spokesperson directed media inquiries to the president’s social media post rather than providing additional administrative details.
The offer arrives amid ongoing debate about the frequency of election irregularities. While instances of voter fraud occur, data suggests they are rare. A tracker maintained by the conservative Heritage Foundation has documented more than 1,600 incidents over the past 40 years. This total represents a small fraction of the overall votes cast during that period.
Trump’s administration has recently increased its scrutiny of voter rolls. The Justice Department sued California officials to force the segregation of mail ballots sent to potential noncitizens. The department also filed a suit against Alaska officials at the president’s request. The Alaska case seeks to prevent the certification of U.S. Senate race results if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan loses.
These legal actions coincide with previous court rulings that blocked the administration from implementing sweeping changes to mail voting. Courts have also rejected efforts to require documentary proof of citizenship for voting. The reward program is part of a wider strategy to influence the midterm elections.
This initiative follows the launch of a $25 million government fraud whistleblower program. Trump told reporters that he would personally determine which recipients were worthy of the prize. The president has also made other financial promises for the campaign trail, including $5,000 payments to Americans if Republicans maintain control of Congress. He has not clarified the funding source for those payments either.
