Sen. Chris Murphy is hospitalized after suffering a stroke, his office confirmed on Sunday. The 53-year-old Democrat was taken to a local hospital after experiencing numbness in his arm at his son’s hockey game on Saturday.
Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, stated that medical staff discovered the stroke upon his arrival. Murphy was then transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital for additional monitoring. Herwitt reported that the senator is responding well to treatment and is currently awake and alert.
“The doctors are encouraged by his progress.. we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Herwitt said. Murphy, who was elected to the House in 2006 and the Senate in 2012, is not on the ballot for Tuesday’s election. He serves on the Appropriations Committee and is a leading voice on immigration and gun control issues.
Murphy is viewed as a contender for senior Senate leadership roles and remains a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race. He joins a small group of recent Senate Democrats who have faced similar health events. Sens. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland both suffered strokes in 2022 and have since recovered.
Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman had a stroke during his 2022 campaign and now uses adaptive technology, such as live captioning devices, to assist in the Senate. Fetterman posted on social media on Sunday that his family is rooting for a full and speedy recovery for Murphy. Several Republican senators, including Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, also offered prayers for the Connecticut senator.
