Six Flags will install seatbelts on the Goliath rollercoaster at its Georgia park following a fatal accident in early October. The decision comes after Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, a 42-year-old teacher and father, was ejected from his seat during a ride.

Kariem fell from the coaster, which features a 165-foot initial drop and a subsequent 180-foot plunge. He struck other cars on the track as he fell. Georgia authorities have opened an investigation into the death.

CEO John Reilly announced the safety changes on Friday. He stated that the company will also fit seatbelts on other coasters using similar restraint systems, though he did not list specific attractions. Goliath currently uses a lap bar design manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard.

Reilly noted that the incident has deeply affected the company. He emphasized that safety is fundamental to the guest experience. The park has hired an independent firm to review safety procedures across all its attractions.

Reilly said the company will communicate its progress and hold itself accountable to its commitments. He added that trust is earned through actions rather than words.

The accident occurs while Six Faces faces a lawsuit regarding its X2 coaster at Magic Mountain. Court documents describe claims of negligence and alleged defective operation by former riders who suffered brain injuries. The chain permanently closed X2 in September.
