Oleshky Fighting Pauses for Six Days Starting Thursday
First Lady Melania Trump says she acted as the sole intermediary to arrange the halt, which allows aid to reach elderly residents.

A six-day pause in military action will begin in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky on Thursday, Oct. 29. The office of First Lady Melania Trump announced the arrangement on Friday, stating that the halt is designed to allow humanitarian aid to enter the city and to prepare for the evacuation of civilians.
The first lady’s office credited Mrs. Trump with brokering the deal directly, rather than attributing the effort to the president or other senior White House officials. Her team described her role as that of an "Exclusive Intermediary" who worked with leadership in both nations to set the terms, timing, and technical procedures for the ceasefire.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that a tentative agreement exists for the occupied territory, though neither government has issued a detailed public statement. The localized ceasefire is unusual for a first lady’s office to announce, typically a domain reserved for the president or foreign minister.
Mrs. Trump characterized the situation in Oleshky as critical, noting that the remaining population consists primarily of elderly residents who lack medical care, food, and clean water. She said that without this intervention, it would have been impossible to bring in aid or evacuate those needing to leave. Under the plan, non-military leaders from both countries will visit homes to assess needs and coordinate transportation for those who wish to evacuate to either Ukraine or Russia.
The announcement follows a recent phone call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the pope raised concerns about the humanitarian crisis in the city. Mrs. Trump also noted that she has helped reunite 34 children with their families after their forced removal by Russian forces.
White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development "amazing news" on X, describing it as a positive step toward peace. The local truce arrives at a time when President Trump’s wider efforts to end the war have stalled, and he has recently expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Newsmax, a conservative American media organization, has agreed to document the work of the Russian and Ukrainian teams as they implement the aid and evacuation plan.
